LEAD HAZARD CONTROL

The City of Kankakee is committed to creating safer, healthier homes for our residents. Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), our Lead Hazard Reduction Program assists homeowners, landlords, and tenants in identifying and eliminating lead-based paint hazards.

If your home was built before 1978, you may qualify for free lead testing and abatement services that may include: window replacement, paint stabilization, and clean up. Our goal is to ensure that every child in Kankakee grows up in a lead-safe environment.

This program is currently not accepting new applications. Our pre-application form is temporarily closed. If you have previously submitted a pre-application, contact 815-933-0506 to check your status.

The purpose of the Lead Hazard Reduction Program is to protect the health and safety of Kankakee residents living in older homes where lead-based paint may still be present. Homes built before 1978 are at higher risk for deteriorated lead paint, particularly around windows, doors, and other high-friction areas.

Through this HUD-funded program, eligible property owners can receive comprehensive lead inspections at no cost. When lead hazards are identified, the program provides hazard control services to ensure the home meets lead-safe standards.

By reducing environmental lead risks in qualifying homes, the program helps safeguard young children, support healthier housing, and promote long-term community well-being. HUD income eligibility guidelines apply.
